Cómo hacer deliciosos Momos en casa
How to Make Delicious Momos at Home
Momos are one of the most popular dumplings in India, loved for their soft outer covering, flavorful filling, and spicy chutney. The good news is that you don't need special equipment to make delicious momos at home.
Ingredients
For the dough
2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
½ teaspoon salt
Water, as needed
1 teaspoon oil (optional)
For the filling
1 cup finely chopped cabbage
½ cup grated or finely chopped carrot
½ cup finely chopped onion
½ cup finely chopped capsicum
2–3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 tablespoon soy sauce
½ teaspoon black pepper
Salt to taste
1 tablespoon oil
You can replace the vegetables with minced chicken, paneer, or another filling of your choice.
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Add flour and salt to a bowl. Gradually add water and knead until you get a smooth, firm dough.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 20–30 minutes. Resting makes the dough easier to roll and shape.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add garlic and ginger and sauté for a few seconds.
Add onion, cabbage, carrot, and capsicum. Cook on high heat for 2–3 minutes. The vegetables should soften slightly but retain some crunch.
Add soy sauce, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and turn off the heat.
Let the filling cool completely before making the momos.
Step 3: Roll the Wrappers
Divide the dough into small, equal-sized balls.
Roll each ball into a thin circular wrapper, approximately 3–4 inches in diameter. Keep the center slightly thicker than the edges so that the wrapper doesn't tear when you add the filling.
Step 4: Fill and Shape the Momos
Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center of each wrapper.
Fold the wrapper over the filling and seal the edges by pressing them together. You can make simple half-moon momos or try pleating the edges for a more traditional appearance.
Make sure the momos are properly sealed so that the filling doesn't escape during steaming.
Step 5: Steam the Momos
Grease a steamer tray lightly with oil and arrange the momos without letting them touch each other.
Steam them for approximately 10–12 minutes, or until the wrappers become slightly translucent and cooked through.
Avoid over-steaming, as the wrappers can become sticky or chewy.
Step 6: Serve Hot
Serve the momos immediately with spicy momo chutney. You can also serve them with chilli sauce, soy sauce, or a simple garlic-chilli dip.
Tips for Perfect Momos
Don't make the wrappers too thick: Thick wrappers can make momos heavy and doughy.
Don't overfill: Too much filling makes sealing difficult and can cause the momos to burst.
Keep the filling relatively dry: Excess moisture can make the wrapper soggy.
Use high heat while cooking the vegetables: This keeps the filling flavorful and slightly crunchy.
Don't overcrowd the steamer: Leave some space between the momos so that steam can circulate properly.
Final Thoughts
Making momos at home is easier than it may seem. Once you learn how to prepare the dough, roll the wrappers, and seal them properly, you can experiment with countless fillings—from classic vegetable momos to chicken, paneer, cheese, and even spicy fusion versions.
With a little practice, homemade momos can become a perfect snack for family gatherings, parties, or simply a weekend treat.
